The Sherline Dovetail-Base Headstock w/ 90-Volt DC Motor 3/4-16 #1m Taper is a precision-engineered component designed for industrial applications, drawing its design from the headstock used in Sherline lathes and milling machines. Constructed from extruded 6061-T6 aluminum, it features a durable black anodized finish. This headstock is equipped with a 3/4-16 #1 Morse taper spindle, which is supported by lifetime lubricated Class 5 bearings. These bearings are known for their accuracy, tighter tolerances, and smoother operation, allowing for a continuous speed of up to 4,000 RPM, with the potential to reach 10,000 RPM with adjusted preload settings.
The headstock’s dovetail base is designed to fit seamlessly with Sherline’s steel dovetailed bed and column materials, ensuring stability and precision during operation. It includes a brass gib for secure attachment and a mounting point for a saddle nut on Sherline leadscrews. The spindle is equipped with a dust cover washer to protect the bearings, although it is not entirely sealed, making it unsuitable for environments with excessive dust or coolant exposure.
The accompanying 90-Volt DC motor provides significant torque at low RPMs, which is crucial for machining tasks. This motor is quieter and smoother compared to equivalent AC/DC motors, offering a variable speed range from 70 to 2800 RPM. The motor’s speed control system is versatile, accepting inputs from 100 VAC to 240 VAC and converting them to a 90V DC output. The motor also features a two-step V-belt pulley system, allowing for adjustments between high-speed, low-torque and low-speed, high-torque operations.
Note: Ensure the spindle and setup are adequate and safe for the intended operation, as the spindle is not designed for high RPM rotation of long or out-of-round parts.
