This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The mechanism involves a drawbar threading through the headstock and into the collet’s backside, drawing it into the adapter and causing the jaws to close and securely grip the part for machining. Each collet size accommodates a limited range of diameters, approximately .001 (.02mm), ensuring precision in part mounting.
WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock to pass entirely through. The maximum diameter for stock passing through is 3/16 or 4.5mm, although collets are available up to 5/16 and 8.0 mm. Larger collets, known as “pot” chucks, are not bored through but are bored to a depth of .260. The collet’s accuracy is maintained with a maximum runout of .002 or less, provided the WW collet adapter is trued as per instructions.
Sherline collets are logically numbered, with inch collets starting with part number 1160 and metric collets with 1178, followed by size indicators. These collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications and are not hardened. It is crucial to verify compatibility with Sherline’s adapter when using WW collets from other manufacturers.
