This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The mechanism involves a drawbar threading through the headstock into the collet’s backside, drawing it into the adapter and causing the jaws to close and securely grip the part to be machined.
WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their design, which includes a hole through both the collet and drawbar, allowing stock with a maximum diameter of 3/16″ or 4.5mm to pass entirely through. Collets exceeding this diameter, known as “pot” chucks, are not bored through but are instead bored to a depth of .260″. This design may result in increased runout when machining parts further from the collet’s front.
Sherline collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications and are not hardened. They feature a shank diameter of .312-.313 and a .275-40 thread. It is crucial to verify compatibility with other manufacturers’ WW collets to ensure they fit the Sherline adapter. The collets are available in metric sizes ranging from .3 mm to 8.0 mm in increments of .1 mm. Special sizes can be ordered if needed, and larger “pot” chucks are also available.
