This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The mechanism involves a drawbar threading through the headstock and into the collet’s backside, drawing it into the adapter and causing the jaws to close and grip the part securely.
WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock with a maximum diameter of 3/16″ to pass entirely through. The collet’s accuracy is notable, with a maximum runout of .002″ or less, provided the WW collet adapter is trued as per instructions. This ensures optimal performance and minimal deviation during machining.
Sherline collets are logically numbered, with inch collets beginning with part number 1160, followed by size indicators in 64ths of an inch. Metric collets start with part number 1178, with size increments of 0.1 mm. These collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications, with a shank diameter of .312-.313 and a .275-40 thread. It is crucial to verify compatibility with other manufacturers’ WW collets to ensure they fit the Sherline adapter. Sherline also offers a slightly larger adapter and drawbar set to accommodate some 8 mm collets from other brands.
