It is designed to automatically center both square and round stock, provided the stock is accurately shaped for all four jaws to grip effectively. This chuck is particularly advantageous for gripping thin-wall tubing, as it distributes the load across four points instead of three, thereby enhancing grip strength without damaging the tubing.
The chuck operates by turning the knurled portion of its outer diameter, which moves all four jaws simultaneously. This mechanism ensures centering accuracy within a few thousandths of an inch, making it suitable for tasks where precision is not the utmost priority. However, for applications requiring perfect centering accuracy, a 4-jaw independent jaw chuck is recommended.
This chuck is capable of holding parts ranging from 3/32 inches to 1-3/16 inches in diameter with the jaws in their normal position, and up to 2-1/4 inches with the jaws reversed. It is compatible with various spindle threads, including those used on Sherline and older Unimat lathes, specifically with a thread size of 12mm x 1mm. The chuck is constructed from 12L14 steel, with jaws made from 12L14 case-hardened steel, ensuring durability and reliability in various machining tasks.
