The Sherline CNC-Ready Lathe Upgrade Kit – 4000/4500 Z Axis w/ Screw (“) is designed to transform any existing Sherline lathe into a CNC-ready machine. This conversion process requires the drilling and tapping of several holes to securely attach the stepper motor mounts. The kit provides drill blocks that are affixed to the lathe’s table or bed using an existing hole, which then serves as a guide for drilling two additional holes. Once these holes are tapped, the new mount can be installed. Additionally, the installation of a new leadscrew is necessary for the lathe’s Z-axis.
This upgrade kit includes essential components such as a stepper motor mount, stepper motor preload bearings, and a CNC coupling. The CNC-ready status indicates that the machine is prepared for the attachment of stepper motors, which can then be controlled via a CNC system that the user must provide. For those unable to develop their own CNC system, various aftermarket suppliers offer compatible stepper motors, drivers, and CNC software to complete the setup.
