The Sherline Tapered Headstock w/ Flat Base ER-16, Cog Belt is a precision-engineered component designed for industrial applications, drawing inspiration from the headstock used in Sherline’s lathe and milling machines. Constructed from extruded 6061-T6 aluminum, it features a durable black anodized finish. This headstock is equipped with an ER-16 spindle and a 30-tooth cog belt pulley, offering versatility and precision in various machining tasks.
The headstock incorporates lifetime lubricated bearings with adjustable preload, ensuring enhanced accuracy, tighter tolerances, and smoother operation. These Class 5 bearings are rated for continuous speeds up to approximately 4,000 RPM, with the potential to reach up to 10,000 RPM with a slightly adjusted preload setting. The design includes a dust cover washer for the spindle bearing, although it is not entirely sealed, necessitating caution in dusty environments.
Mounting the headstock is facilitated by two 1/4-20 mounting holes and an alignment key slot on the flat base, allowing for secure attachment to fixtures or machines. The ER-16 collet nut is included with the spindle headstock, providing additional utility for various machining operations. Optional Nickel/Teflon plating is available for the spindle, offering rustproof protection for enhanced durability.
Note: The spindle is not designed for high RPM rotation of long or out-of-round parts, and it should not be operated in a coolant bath. Operators must ensure the setup is safe and adequate for the intended application.
