The Sherline 12 Tabletop Mill XY Base w/ Ball Screws CNC-Ready is an advanced milling solution designed for those who require a robust and expansive work area. This product is ideal for users who already possess a vertical milling column and seek to enhance their setup with a more substantial base. The XY base is a versatile component that has found applications in various industrial manufacturing environments, offering the same functionality as a complete vertical mill minus the headstock and motor/speed control.
This particular XY base is derived from the 5400-series mill and has been specifically modified to incorporate ball screws, which are known for their precision and efficiency. The base features a 12-inch mill base and a 13-inch mill table, providing ample space for a variety of milling tasks. The mill saddle is coated with electroless nickel and Teflon, ensuring durability and smooth operation. Additionally, the base is equipped with stepper-motor mounts that include high-torque couplings, facilitating the integration of CNC systems.
For manual control, the base includes adjustable “zero” handwheels on both the X and Y axes, each with laser-engraved aluminum collars. An oil reservoir is integrated into the X/Y axes to maintain lubrication of critical components, while a brass leadscrew cover protects the rear of the Y-axis leadscrew from debris. The accordion way cover further safeguards the machine’s internal components.
Users intending to utilize this XY base with an existing Z-Axis must modify their column base to accommodate the brass cover tube. This involves drilling a -inch hole through the column base, with detailed instructions provided in the ball screw retrofit documentation. It is important to note that milling columns manufactured before 1995 require modification to be compatible with this XY base, whereas those made after 1995 do not.
Note: CNC-ready machines cannot be operated manually unless double-shaft stepper motors are installed.
