The Sherline Dovetail-Base Headstock w/ 90-Volt DC Motor ER-16 is a precision-engineered component designed for industrial applications, drawing inspiration from the headstock used in Sherline’s lathe and milling machines. Constructed from extruded 6061-T6 aluminum, it features a durable black anodized finish. This headstock is equipped with an ER-16 spindle, which is renowned for its versatility and precision.

The headstock incorporates lifetime lubricated bearings with adjustable preload, ensuring superior accuracy, tighter tolerances, and smoother operation. These Class 5 bearings are designed to operate at continuous speeds of up to 4,000 RPM, with the capability to adjust for speeds up to 10,000 RPM. The dovetail base includes a brass gib that fits seamlessly with Sherline’s steel dovetailed bed and column material, providing a stable and secure mounting solution.

The accompanying 90-Volt DC motor is a high-torque unit that delivers maximum torque at low RPM, making it particularly effective for machining tasks. It offers smoother and quieter performance compared to equivalent AC/DC motors. The motor features a two-step V-belt pulley system, allowing for adjustments between high-speed, low-torque and low-speed, high-torque operations. The variable speed electronic control maintains consistent RPM, accommodating input voltages from 100 VAC to 240 VAC and converting them to 90V DC output.

Note: The spindle is not fully sealed and should be protected from dust and coolant exposure to prevent premature bearing wear.
