This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The mechanism involves a drawbar threading through the headstock and into the collet’s backside, drawing it into the adapter and causing the jaws to close and grip the part securely. This system is renowned for its accuracy, accommodating a small range of diameters with a tolerance of approximately .001 (.02mm).
WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock with a maximum diameter of 3/16 or 4.5mm to pass entirely through. Collets larger than this diameter, known as “pot” chucks, are not bored through but are instead bored to a depth of .260. The collet’s maximum runout is .002 or less, and when the WW collet adapter is properly trued, it ensures optimal performance with minimal runout.
Sherline collets are logically numbered, with inch collets beginning with part number 1160 followed by two digits indicating the size in 64ths of an inch. The 1/4″ collet, for instance, is designated as P/N 116016. These collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications and are not hardened. It is crucial to verify compatibility with Sherline’s adapter when considering collets from other manufacturers.
