This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The mechanism involves a drawbar threading through the headstock and into the collet’s backside, drawing it into the adapter, which in turn closes the jaws to securely grip the part being machined. Each collet size accommodates a limited range of diameters, approximately .001 (.02mm), providing a highly accurate part mounting system.
WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their design, which includes a hole through both the collet and drawbar. The maximum diameter stock that can pass entirely through the collet is 3/16 or 4.5mm. Collets larger than this diameter are often referred to as “pot” chucks and are not bored through, being only bored to a depth of .260. This design may result in increased runout further from the collet’s front, depending on the setup and part length.
Sherline collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications and are not hardened. They feature a shank diameter of .312-.313 and a .275-40 thread. It is crucial to verify compatibility with other manufacturers’ WW collets to ensure they fit the Sherline adapter. Metric collets are available in sizes from .3 mm to 8.0 mm in increments of .1 mm.
