The Sherline 11/64″ (.1719) WW Collet offers a precise and efficient method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe, ensuring high centering accuracy. This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The drawbar, threading through the headstock and into the collet’s backside, pulls the collet into the adapter, causing the jaws to close and securely grip the part for machining. This system is renowned for its accuracy, accommodating a narrow range of diameters with a tolerance of approximately .001 (.02mm).
WW collets, distinct from milling collets, feature a hole that extends through both the collet and drawbar, allowing stock with a maximum diameter of 3/16 or 4.5mm to pass entirely through. Collets exceeding this diameter are known as “pot” chucks and are not bored through, being only .260 deep. The collet’s runout is minimized to .002 or less, provided the WW collet adapter is trued as per instructions, ensuring optimal performance.
Sherline collets are logically numbered, with inch collets beginning with part number 1160 followed by two digits indicating the size in 64ths of an inch. These collets are not hardened and are manufactured to standard WW specifications. It is crucial to verify compatibility with Sherline’s adapter when considering WW collets from other manufacturers. Sherline also offers a slightly larger adapter and drawbar set to accommodate some 8 mm collets from other brands.
